José Galante – Chief Winemaker at Bodegas Salentein.

With more than 40 vintages, José Galante is considered the father of modern winemaking in Argentina, Galante’s influence has reached across the generations and transformed Argentine wines, bringing them to the international stage.

Galante was born and raised in Mendoza, Argentina’s most widely recognized wine growing region. He learned his craft from his father and grandfather who were both winemakers.  At the Enology School at the Universidad Juan Agustin Maza (UJAM) he was privileged to study under Francisco Oreglia, pioneering author of Argentine winemaking.

Before joining Bodegas Salentein as the first chief winemaker in 2010, José Galante led the Catena Zapata Group for more than thirty years and worked with numerous international wine consultants. Salentein’s winemaking philosophy is the true expression of José Galante; to fully preserve the full spectrum of fruit aromas and flavors through a smooth, gentle winemaking process and leading-edge technology. He believes oak should be present in a wine but without destroying the character of the varietal or the terroir. The end result is, as he puts it, “aromatic, highly concentrated wines, with fine tannin texture, a smooth and silky feel and a lingering finish–wines that truly reflect the very essence of the Uco Valley.”

“El Señor” is now also as part of the winemaking duo behind the creative and unique wines of Le Nez, bringing in both his Argentine passion and his experience.
